Theatrical Faces

A couple years ago I was invited to draw caricatures at a casting party for a small theater company in Lawrenceville, NJ. I drew all the actors there, plus a few who couldn't make it from photos, and they posted my caricatures of them on their website as a clickable image that takes you to the photo of the actor. I was called again last summer and early this year to draw a bunch more faces for them to include on their site, and I was honored to help them out again, though this time they were drawn only from photos.

My What Big Teeth You Have!

I drew this googly eyed fellow (in ink and wash) as the Big Bad Wolf, for a production of "Little Red Riding Hood" for a youth theater company in NJ, last fall. They wanted a huge size which I don't usually work in: 18 x 24, and were apparently going to use the full sized drawing as a prop on stage. I never did find out how it was used as they never sent me photos or posted it on their website. Maybe it was never used, as those teeth and crazy eyes might have been too scary for the kids. I want to do more work like this!

 

Goofin' On the Ghost Hunters Part 5

This past February, I was contacted by Bruce Tango to draw up some new versions of the caricatures I'd done of the TAPS/'Ghost Hunters' group for gifts to Steve and Dave (Bruce's son) for all their hard work, with the idea to possibly use them as images on t-shirts.

Here's the final version of Steve, Investigator and Tech Expert, drawn in traditional pen and ink, and touched up in Photoshop:

Steve has a deathly phobia of spiders, as fans of the show are well aware, so having one in the picture dangling above him with a flashlight was a blackly comic touch! Ideas provided by Bruce.

Next is the new version of Dave Tango, Steve's partner-in-ghostbust,er,hunting, on 'Ghost Hunters' AND the new 'Ghost Hunters Academy', and like myself, a native New Jersey-an:

                              

I did several preliminary sketches to try out different styles than the originals and to fix some things that I thought could have been done better, but alas, Bruce loved the originals so much that we ended up going with those, with updated coloring and assorted details.

Here's the other sketches I tried out (drawn on tracing paper, which accounts for the 'wrinkly' look):

                              

I really liked this version, especially the more exaggerated face and more dynamic stance. But you never know-I may yet get to use this one for another set of gifts?

I also tried out a more 'angular'/stylized version of Steve:

Hopefully these will be given a chance to be used at some point- but for now, I just enjoyed the opportunity to draw these guys again and to help out my buddy Bruce. Thanks again Mr.T!

Goofin' on the Ghost Hunters Part 4

I got a chance to participate in the Tourette's fundraiser in Westfield, NJ several months ago for the second time, (post about the first one here) again hosted by Bruce Tango, and this time featuring members of both "Ghost Hunters" and its spinoff "Ghost Hunters International. I presented full color caricatures to Steve, Dave, Dustin, Joe, Bruce, and special guest comedian Kevin Meaney. Unfortunately, I was not able to make it in time to contribute the caricatures for the fundraiser raffle as I did at the previous event, but was able to get some pictures taken with the members of the cast. Met Joe and Dustin for the first time, and they were awesome - funny, gracious, down to earth guys ready to answer any questions the fans had about paranormal investigation and providing lots of anecdotes about the show and 'behind-the-scenes' tidbits. Once again, a wonderful time was had and looking forward to the next TAPS sponsored event. Thanks again to Bruce Tango for making this possible!

Grooviness!!!

Well, hello there again, and welcome back to Caricatoonz! I've been away from the blog for about a month too long, so without further ado, I'll jump right in and share some of what's been going on.
